Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show
I have to confess that I really enjoy watching MTV 'reality' shows such as MTV Cribs, The Hill and My Super Sweet Sixteen.  They require no brain cells at all to watch so they're perfect viewing for that hour after I return from work when I'm really, really tired and just need to relax.  I don't have MTV so the episodes are pretty old by the time they're shown on a channel I do have.  Not that it matters at all as they're pretty much interchangeable.  I'm fully aware of the fact that these shows are contributing to the dumbing down of society, that they're contributing to the revolting idea that people can become 'celebrities' just by being rich and totally obnoxious and that in some cases they're totally faked.  However, I'm not really bothered.  I use my brain plenty at work and reserve the right to dumb down as much as I like in my spare time.

The whole list... )

This is Scribble by Underworld.  The best bit of new music I've heard in ages.  I'm not normally a big Underworld fan but they've gone a bit drum and bass with this one which I really like.  I can't believe I found out about this through listening to 6music.  They play such a random selection of stuff.
Today didn't start particularly well.  I was really tired last night and was looking forward to my Saturday morning lie in.  Unfortunately, the council picked 9am this morning to park a flatbed truck with the engine running outside my bedroom window and proceeded to produce a pnuematic drill and fix a pothole.  The noisy process took 45 minutes to complete by which time I was well and truly awake and thought that I may as well get up.  Interestingly they didn't paint the double line back on the fixed bit of road.  It's across the entrance to a car park but I bet someone tries their luck and parks there tonight.

This afternoon my mum came round and helped me hang my new bedroom curtains.  I'd been looking for lavender coloured blackout curtains to put in my bedroom for absolutely ages as my old ones weren't thick enough to keep out the light in summer and I kept waking up at 5am.  I hadn't managed to find any as you seem to have to buy ordinary curtains and then sew the blackout lining in afterwards which is a bit beyond my sewing capabilities.  Then Mum spotted some in her 'House of Bath' catalogue and I decided to bite the bullet and order.  I had my reservations as I'm not normally keen on buying fabric stuff from catalogues or online as I like to see it before I buy and also because 'House of Bath' is clearly a catalogue aimed at retired people.  When the curtains first arrived I thought that my fears had been justifed.  I hadn't realised that they had a printed pattern on them and thought they would look really cheap but in the absence of anything else I decided I may as well hand them up.  Mum helped me out with them as I hadn't hung curtains properly before and they were a bit on the heavy side.  Now they're up I'm quite happy with them.  You can't really see the pattern and they certainly block out a lot more light than the old ones.  They don't totally black out the light as the curtain pole is a few centimetres away from the wall but it's certainly an improvement.  I'll see how I get on with them.

This afternoon I stumbled across 'Say Anything' being shown on Film4.  I hadn't seen it before but was aware that it is considered a classic of it's genre so I decided to watch it.  I thought it was lovely.  A really enjoyable movie that captures first love perfectly.  However, I was shocked at how dated it looked.  It was released in 1989 which doesn't feel like that long ago to me but it looks really, really 80s.  Much more so than Press Gang which was being made at the same time.  I guess I'm just showing my age as an old lady of nearly 30.

To be honest I've spent pretty much all day watching TV.  After 'Say Anything' I watched 'Doctor Who' (of course).  I enjoyed it and will be really interested to see how The Moff manages to resolve that cliffhanger.  Generally, it's been a great series.  I hope the final episode lives up to my expectations.

Tomorrow I'll be going clothes shopping again.  Last weekend I went to Kingston and got a cardigan with gold coloured metal studds all round it in New Look and a shirt dress from H&M.  I still desperately need new work clothes but I'm finding it hard to track down smart but fashionable stuff suitable for summer.  It's so much easier for blokes.  All they need to do is buy shirts and trousers and the shops are full of them.  Also, I'm finding that the same shops are everywhere.  Now all the department stores stock the same concessions it's so difficult to find different stuff.  I find myself looking at the same items all the time.  I also really need to avoid buying any more grey cardigans or dresses.  I think I have 10 grey cardigans and 5 grey dresses now.  I must try and be more adventurous!  Easier said than done though.  I'll probably end up just buying more shoes.

I also have the added stress of choosing what to wear for our team building day on Thursday.  The dress code is casual which always causes me problems.  I need to find something which is casual, relatively smart and which I can wear with sensible shoes as we're apparently doing an outdoor activity in the afternoon.  I will struggle with this.  I guess if this is the biggest problem on my mind I'm really in quite a good place right now!
