i_just_hide: (Dexter Fletcher - Tube Tales)
A friend of mine is taking part in Shine London 2011 which involves walking 26 miles over night in aid of Cancer Research UK.  She is working her way through an extensive training plan and I've now kept her company on two long walks.  On Bank Holiday Monday I walked 13.2 miles with her and her husband from Wimbledon, through Wimbledon Common, around Richmond Park and back to Wimbledon Village.  Before the walk I'd been worried that I wouldn't make it all the way round as I'm so chronically unfit but we all made it without any major problems.  It helped that it was a really good day for walking.  Not too hot and not too cool with plenty of sunshine.  We walked all round the park including up to the top of King Henry's Mound where we got to see the famous view of St Paul's Cathedral 10 miles away.  It's also a great time of year to see the Richmond Park deer.  We saw several lone red stags wandering around (probably preparing for the rut in the autum), a large group of red deer including females and young and some of the smaller fallow deer which are usually more difficult to spot (I was suprised to read on the website that there are more fallow deer than red deer in the park - I always see more red ones).  I also saw the windmill at Wimbledon Common for the first time and learnt that Lord Baden Powell wrote some of the Scouting Book for Boys there.  Hopefully, I'll be able to go back there one day to visit the little museum.

Today my friend's target distance was 14 miles.  We met up with another friend to walk part of the Capital Ring from Richmond to Greenford.  This comprises two sections of the Capital Ring which are five miles each (Richmond to Osterley Lock and Osterley Lock to Greenford) so we knew we would have to tack a few more miles on the end.  Unfortunately, the weather forecast wasn't that great and for once it was right.  It started raining when we got to Isleworth and by the time we entered Syon Park it was tipping it down.  We stopped off and ate our packed lunches standing in the covered entrance to Syon Park Garden Centre.  It felt very British!  The next few miles mainly followed the Grand Union Canal and it wasn't that enjoyable in the pouring rain.  However, we carried on and by the time we got to Hanwell Lock it had pretty much stopped.  We walked through Perivale and Greenford (areas of London that I don't know at all) and decided to carry on to do the next stage of the walk ending in Harrow on the Hill.  The last section of the walk was lovely.  The hills were a bit of a shock to our tired legs but we got to see a great view over North London all the way to the Chilterns.  Finally we found ourselves walking through all the historic buildings of Harrow School.  My legs ache loads now but it was a great way to spend a day.
One week to go until the wedding. This time next week I'll be strutting my funky stuff on the dancefloor at the reception with my best friends. Yay!

I tried my outfit on today. Strapless bras are truly awful things. Even though I bought a size smaller than normal the darned thing still keeps slipping down. I get the feeling I'll be spending a portion of next Saturday in the loo adjusting my top half. On the plus side, the dress looks fab. I'm still nowhere near a size 8 on my bottom half but with 'suck it all in' pants I think I'll get away with it. After all my angst over getting pink cardigan I've decided that I'm going to wear an off white cardie I had all along. I wore it to a wedding 5 years ago but I doubt anyone will notice. I've also decided that I'm going to leave my hair down after all. My top half will look a bit bare if I tie my hair back. I'm relying on all my readers to pray that it's not too windy next Saturday, otherwise I may end up looking like Cousin It during the photos! Shoes are now the only thing causing me stress. They're meant to be delivered 7-10 working days from when I put my order in. They include Saturdays as a working day so it is now 6 days since I ordered. This means that they should turn up by Thursday at the latest. Fingers crossed everyone. I'm also going to try and book a manicure (my first one ever!) at work next week. The only things I still need to buy are jewellry and and a bag. I'm going to go into Kingston or Wimbledon tomorrow and sort them out.

Before going shopping tomorrow I'm going to be cheering on the runners in The Royal Parks Half Marathon. My friend is co-ordinating the involvement of her charity Asthma UK in the event. Her fiance and his friend are running dressed as Asthma Man. There's loads of other stuff going on in Hyde Park such as food and well-being show so it should be a good day. Also, we get pom-poms! The only bad thing is that I have to be there for 10am. Good job I had a lie in this morning.

Today has been moderately productive. I went out for a run, put all my recycling in the relevant bins, bought a new hoover (it's called Hetty and she's pink!) and did some cleaning.

I managed to miss Strictly as I got the time wrong. Hopefully it'll be on BBC watch again shortly so I can catch up.
Had to get up early on Saturday morning as I'd booked an appointment at the chiropodist for 11am. I was a week late going as I'd booked last week's appointment at the same time as a hairdressers appointment and had to cancel. Unfortunately, the verruca had got worse in the mean time and my foot has to be left bandaged up until Thursday. That means I'll have to have baths instead of showers to keep my foot dry which will probably result in the cold tap going wrong again. Oh well, worse things happen at sea as my mum would say.

After the chiropodist I picked up my mail and had a lovely letter from my penfriend who I hadn't heard from for ages. Then I had to clean the flat as my mum and sister were coming round after lunch. It's really good when someone decides to visit as it gives me kick to get the flat sorted out. It looks great now but it won't take long for me to clutter it up again. The purpose of mum and sis coming round was to help me put the new cover on my sofa. The old black cover has now been replaced with a red, orange and white flower patterned one. I like it lots. It really brightens up the room and makes it look bigger. The amount of c**p that flew out from down the sides of the sofa when we took the old cover off was pretty scary. Eating seed mix is healthy but it gets everywhere! Once the sofa was sorted we walked back down to my parents' house. The weather was glorious so it was nice to have a garden to sit out in. Also got to admire my sister's engagement ring which is a lovely, subtle bit of bling. Informed her that I'm happy to do anything as a bridesmaid except use fake tan. She is now demanding that I go on holiday somewhere hot before the wedding. I like being 'pale and interesting' though :(

On Saturday evening we went to see Quartermaine's Terms at Richmond Theatre. Before the show went for a meal at Rustica in Richmond. Rustica is a really nice and reasonably priced pizza place. They had the front of the restaurant open which was a bit unfortunate really as it opens out on to a busy road. Anyway, I had a Crostina and a Fiorentina Pizza. I often use going out with my parents as an opportunity to have a Fiorentina as my friends find the idea of having an egg on a pizza disgusting for some reason.

Quartermaine's Terms starred Nathaniel Parker (aka Inspector Linley), Christopher Timothy and Victoria Wicks (Sally Smedley in DTDD). It is set in the staff room of an English as a Foreign Language College in Oxford in the 1950s and tells the story of the teachers who work there over several years. It had some funny moments but generally it was a bit grim. From my point of view it was interesting as it looked at the relationships and friendships between workmates. We often discuss at work the fact that we spend more time with our work colleagues than we do our families/friends, yet we often only know snippets of their lives. Anyway, Nathaniel Parker didn't really have a huge amount to do. I'm not sure that he deserved star billing. Although he played the titular character, Quartermaine, it was largely an ensemble piece and some of the other actors had much more challanging parts to play. Christopher Timothy was good but I do feel that he only really ever plays one part - the stern, serious Englishman. Sadly, despite the fact 'All Creatures Great and Small' finished years ago, I still think he should have his arm up a cow's behind and be married to Lynda Bellingham! If anyone is thinking of going to see it, be warned - it is 2 hours and 10 minutes long. There was an interval half way through but I was still a bit uncomfortable by the end of the second half. It was also a bit unfortunate that I the bloke in front of me's head was right in the way of the main action which took place on the left of the stage. That's the problem with old theatres like Richmond. Not much fun if you get stuck behind a tall person.

Today, I got up early and did loads of laundry. I also did my Nell McAndrew work out video which is by far the most strenuous one I have. I was quite impressed with myself as I got through the whole thing only stopping once for water. My legs will really ache tomorrow morning. Shortly after I'd finished the workout my Dad phoned to say he'd just been phoned by a guy with the same surname as us who'd seen an entry I'd written in a church visitors book when we were down in Kent. The guy was doing some family history research whilst visiting from Charlotte, North Carolina and was wondering whether we were related. He'd looked my Dad up in the phone book and called him up. Dad had arranged for him to call back later when I was at their place for dinner. We had a chat and established that he is a descendent of my great, great, great grandfather. A bit of a suprise but very interesting. Mum and Dad are hoping to meet with him while he's still in the UK. Oh, and I bought some shorts for running, the first pair I've bought since 1998. It may be some time before I pluck up the courage to wear them.

Still haven't seen Dr Who. Might wait until Friday to watch the repeat of BBC3.

Shame I have to go back to work tomorrow really. At least I'm on a course on Wednesday afternoon and there's only three weeks to go before the end of term.
I lost my Oyster Card last Thursday. Due to my utter crapness I only got around to reporting it lost tonight. I'm fairly sure the card had around £20 on it when it went missing. It now only has £8 on it. Pressumably, someone found it and started using it. Bother! Anyway, they're going to stop the old card and send me a new one. I was a bit worried that they wouldn't do anything as I didn't know my card number but it didn't seem to matter.

I ran up and down the stairs seven times this evening. This is a new personal best. I think I'm well on target for ten times each evening in three weeks time. Go me! My thighs are hurting a bit at the moment though.

The weather forecast said that it should be showery today but we've had bright sunshine all day. I kind of like it when they get it wrong like that.

Failure...

I'm crap. I didn't make it out shopping today because I realised the last two episodes of Falcon Beach were on and couldn't tear myself away until it had finished. What a pathetic couch potato excuse.

Today was hot. I didn't help the situation this morning by cooking breakfast, ironing, having a shower and blow drying my hair just to ensure the flat was as warm as possible. It was actually quite nice outside as there was a nice cool breeze. I took my plastic recycling down to Tesco then got something for dinner in Asda. I should really have made better use of a nice day. Being British I'm always aware that every sunny day could be the last day of summer.

The weight loss attempt has now started. I tried on my new shorts last night. They just about fit but they're a bit tight. The size 12 will be much too big around the waist so I'm going to have to lose a few pounds to fit into the 10. I'm currently around 8 stone 12 pounds. I guess I probably need to be 8 stone 5 ish to get into the shorts. Today I ran up and down the fire escape stairs five times (all seven flights) and then did a 30 minute stretch and tone video. My legs now hurt. I find it difficult to lose weight unless I starve myself. This time I'm determined though. I'm going to cut out chocolate and cheese and try to cut down on wheat. At present I'm suffering from chocolate withdrawl. I've eaten a big dinner but I need something else. Aaarrrggghhh!

Watched Dr Who. Quite enjoyed it. Martha Jones is such a good character. It's a shame we have to put up with annoying Catherine Tate instead. Jenny was an interesting character. Not sure how the Dr Who fan community will react to this major development but I bet quite a few of them enjoyed seeing the lovely Georgia Moffat on screen! I think I can see how the rest of the season is shaping up now. I get the feeling Jenny, Rose, Martha and Donna may all end up in the same place at some point... Joe Dempsie was a bit wasted though.

Then made the mistake of watching Madonna performing live at the Radio One Big Weekend. It'd been so long since I'd seen footage of live Madonna performance that I'd forgotten what a dreadful singer she is. The dancing was great but the singing was rubbish. It was all a visual spectacle really. Compared to the likes of Beyonce and even Britney (at her best obviously) it was all a bit disappointing. Also, Madonna seems to be turning into Cher. They must have the same plastic surgeon!

Tomorrow I'm definitely going to go shopping. I need some smart sandals and a skirt for work. I should really hoover too but I bet I don't get around to it.

In tonight's exciting installment of verucca watch I can reveal that I took the dressing off last night and the offending toe now looks awful. I'm hoping this is a sign that the treatment is working and not that my toe is about to fall off or something similar.

I walked home from work this evening for the first time in a couple of weeks. My legs were really tired by the time I got to Asda. I was desperate to get home in time for Hollyoaks and became very irritated with the people in front of me in the 15 items or less queue as they clearly had more than 15 items. I am such a sad case these days.

Payday today. I got an incremental pay rise on 1st April. Unfortunately, most of it just disappeared as it forced my student loan repayments up and my pension contributions went up because of changes to the pension scheme. At least I'll now be receiving a whole £30 per month more than I did before. Not to be sniffed at in the current economic climate.

Tomorrow night I will be hiding from my school reunion although part of me would like to hide outside just to see what everyone looks like. Nobody I really want to speak to is going. One of the people who is attending was actually expelled from school. Will definitely be looking at the photos afterwards though.

Each week a staff bulletin is produced by the marketing department of my workplace. The bulletin features useful information, such as the canteen menu for the week, alongside articles about things which are perceived to be of interest to people working for the organisation. Next week I am one of the featured articles. I was interviewed about my uni course by the new chap from marketing and had my photo taken. I managed to convince my interviewer to take several photos and let me choose the best. The result wasn't at all bad. I've made it my new facebook userpic so those of you who are also my facebook friends can check it out on there. I expect to spend much of next week being stared at by people I've never met before because they saw me in the bulletin.

It's been ages since I updated here. What have I been doing...

Last Saturday I went out for drinks with someone I used to work with in a shop whilst I was doing my A-levels. I hadn't seen her for years before she found me on facebook. It was a very enjoyable Saturday night out. The scene in the main pub area of Twickenham was a bit worrying though. Normally the pubs of Twickenham are pretty crammed on a Saturday night even if there's no rugby on. On this occasion there were more staff than customers in The Cabbage Patch. Although it was nice to be able to sit in a virtually deserted beer garden and have a chat, I can't imagine how the pub could have made any money that night. I don't know whether it was because it was bank holiday weekend or whether the smoking ban has hit hard. Anyhow, I like the range of pubs in Twickenham and I hope they survive. The friend I met is engaged now. Her engagment ring is beautiful and unusual. I was suitably jealous.

This Tuesday my 5 best girlfriends are coming round to drink the rather expensive bottle of champagne I was given for passing my uni course. Then on Thursday I'm off to the Questors theatre in Ealing to see an amateur production of 'Donkeys Years' with my parents. I haven't been there before and I'm looking forward to it.

I am utterly sick of the adverts for High School Musical 2 which seem to appearing in every ad break at the moment. It's now ten past eleven at night and there were two adverts for the blasted thing in an ad break on E4. Surely a vast majority of their target audience are in bed by now and even if they were still awake I doubt they'd be watching a repeat of the 100 greatest music videos of all time on E4. I didn't like the first High School Musical very much. It seemed to me to be a sickly sweet version of Grease with all the good/exciting stuff taken out. However, my 7-11 years old Brownies loved it. Nearly all of them seemed to get either the CD or DVD for Christmas last year. Admittedly, I'd rather they were watching HSM rather then Grease as its clearly more 'suitable'. I hope they don't think secondary school is really like HSM though. In my experience it was much more like Grease.

Only one week to go until my running debut. I went out running for the first time in ages today and I didn't manage anything like 5K. My hayfever is playing up and I'm having trouble breathing. Grrr. At least my mother has great faith in me. When I asked her to guess how long it would take me to run 5K she said about an hour and a half! If it takes me more than 40 minutes I'm giving up. I hope it'll take about 30-40 minutes. Fingers crossed that it doesn't rain and that it's not too hot.

I've watched the first two episodes of Skins since the last time I updated. It's really quite good. I wish I'd got round to finishing the TV series about out of control youth I started writing when I was at school. I'm great at starting things but hopeless at finishing them. The series was basically wish fulfillment. I was very quiet, shy and studious at school. I was never in a position to hang out with the popular kids and I certainly never got invited to the wild parties. In response I started writing a Grange Hill style TV series in which I got to do all the things I wished I was confident enough to do in real life. When I started seeing the evil ex-boyfriend my life became more interesting and I lost interest in the writing. Shame.

Brian won Big Brother 8 in the end. I'm glad as the twins are bound to make more money from the media. I didn't really follow the series and I'm glad it's over. Perhaps we'll get some decent TV back now.

Talking of decent TV, Hollyoaks was rather good on Friday. It was very clever of the storyliners to throw in the story about Rhys' paternity in order to make it more likely that the Ashworth family wouldn't twig that Hannah was anorexic. I hope that Hannah recover from her illness and gets it on with Gilly. They would make a lovely couple. Ohhh, and Darren seems to be becoming a nice person now he's with Zoe. It's clear that Zoe should really be with Zac though. And Kris is returning soon. What will happen between him and Jessica. It is probably a very poor reflection on my life that I care so much about this.
I cooked Thai red curry using Tescos' Finest Thai Red Curry Sauce on Monday night. I was a bit concerned that the chicken wasn't cooked properly so when I made it again tonight (living alone means I either eat the same thing twice in a week or waste half a jar of it) I stir fried the chicken for a bit longer. I think describing the result as 'cremated' would be exaggerating, however the word 'burnt' would probably be acceptable. Oh well. If I invite people round for dinner I'll just have to make sure I cook in the oven. At least I don't have to cook tomorrow night as I'm going round to my parents' place to eat before a trip to the theatre.

The weather is dreadful of course. Today it waited until 4.30pm to rain (just in time to soak everyone on their way home from work) and hasn't stopped since. We're having an end of term barbeque at work on Friday. It will be very depressing if it rains.

A steam train passed through the station tonight. I heard the whistle first and realised that it was coming our way (trains normally let off their horn if they aren't stopping at the station) so I rushed over to the window to have a look. I didn't see much as it was travelling very quickly but I saw the smoke. It has given me an idea...

My sister survived Glastonbury. She's put some photos up on Facebook which generally involve a lot of mud. I'm still jealous that I didn't get to go. I should probably shut up moaning about it now though.

I ran up and down the stairs in my block three times today as part of my budget effort to get fit. I hope it's working as the weather is preventing me from going out running. On Friday I'm trying yoga for the first time ever. Mum's been trying to get me to take up yoga for years but I've always argued that I'd be hopeless at. We shall see...

Oh and we've got a new Prime Minister. Some bloke called Gordon. Not democratically elected of course because we don't really do democracy in this country any more. Will anything change? Probably not.
i_just_hide: (Prodigy - No Good (Start the Dance) - Ma)
It is 12:35am.  I would quite like to go to bed as I have a lot to do tomorrow.  However, someone who lives on the the floor above mine is having a party which involves playing extremely loud reggae music.  I went out into the courtyard half an hour ago and the noise was deafening as the door of the ofending flat was open and the courtyard is really echoey (is that a word?)  It seems to be getting louder and louder.  I would complain but I doubt they'd hear me.

I shouldn't really complain as I've lived here for six months and this is maybe the second or third party I've been disturbed by which I guess isn't bad in a block of 93 flats.  Also, it's not a weeknight.  But still, these blocks of high density housing just aren't suitable for very loud parties.  Grrrr.

On the plus side, the Arctic Monkeys are on Later with Jools Holland.  They're not the happiest looking bunch but they sound just like they do on their recordings.  Basically, they're the first rock band in ages who make me want to dance.  I'm dead jealous that my sister will be seeing them at Glastonbury.

My mum and my sister are coming round for a cup of tea tomorrow so I've had to tidy up the flat.  It looks quite good right now.  I can't believe how little I've managed to trash it in six months.

I've got to go out tomorrow morning to run a few errands and I might buy a new houseplant or some flowers.  The pointestia my Wimbledon friend gave me for Christmas finally died earlier this week.  I think I over watered it.  Killed by excessive love.  I'm hopeless at keeping plants alive.  Maybe I'll stick to cut flowers in the future, at least they purposely have a limited life span.  I'm almost the only person in my block who doesn't have any plants on their balcony.  One flat has a tomato plant and two troughs of pansies, another has palm trees.  Will have to do something as I feel like I'm letting the side down at the moment.

The reason I know that so many people have plants is that my new method of getting free exercise is running up and down the fire escape stairs.  I can currently run up and down three and half times before my calf muscles start shaking like mad.  I got a few funny looks from a woman sitting in her car in the Blockbuster car park this evening but I don't really care.  I'll be the one laughing when I have more toned thighs and bum.  I've also been trying to do my exercise DVDs every other day and I'm going to go for a run tomorrow.  I'm determined to be a size 10 rather than a 10-12.  It's about time my bottom half matched my super skinny (some might say bony) top half once again.

Still no let up in the loud music.  I think I'm going to have to try and sleep with a pillow over my head.

I got home from work a bit early on Friday and caught Home and Away for the first time in ages.  I hardly recognised any of the cast and the plot was ludicrous but I was excited to see that Callen Mulvey is in it at the moment.  It's got to be said that he was looking a bit rough but I guess this could be deliberate as he's playing an evil criminal.  I was never into Heartbreak High when it was originally shown as it was on BBC2 between 6pm and dinner, a time when my dad was firmly in command of the TV.  I only started following it when it was shown as part of BBC morning kids shows during the school holidays.  I remember watching loads of episodes in the summer between A'Levels and university - about the same time that I got into The Tribe.  I think Drazic was the first person I ever saw with a pierced eyebrow.  Now I feel old.  All the blokes I fancied as a teenager look ancient now.

As I have no social life at the moment I've been following  'Any Dream will Do.'  I have a soft spot for 'Joseph' as I appeared in a school production of it back in 1995.  I was in the chorus as usual.  Anyhow, after last weeks episode I googled 'Joseph' and discovered that there is a touring production going on at the moment.  Who should be playing one of the brothers but someone I appeared in many school plays with.  Anthony Wren was always talented, particularly as a dancer.  He was one of the stars whilst I loitered in the background but he was always kind and chatty.  He almost lost his chances of a showbiz career altogether when he was 16 as he had his tonsils out which messed up his singing voice.  I'm so pleased that he's making  a living out of his talent.  So many talented people appeared in school plays with me but most of them didn't pursue it and are doing normal jobs now.  It's always good to see people from my school (which is in the bottom 10 schools in London for results) doing well.  Other sucessful people include the actress Claire Murphy and runner Mo Farrah.

On an unconnected topic, I'm trying to get fit.  I've never been fit in my life so it seems like as good a time as any to start.  I went for my first ever run today.  I only ran for 15 minutes but I thought I'd better start gently in case I did myself an injury.  I also did a stretch and tone video.  Hopefully, I didn't upset the people in the flat below to much with my stomping about!

I'm still enjoying retro kids TV on YouTube.  It's so good seeing clips of Phillip, Andy and Andi in the broom cupboard.  I'd almost forgotten how amateurish it all was in those days.  Phillip clearly puts the programmes on to air in his clips.  Must invest in broadband so I can watch some of the longer clips.
