Go team GB...
Aug. 16th, 2009 10:12 pmHave achieved absolutely nothing of any value this weekend. Instead spent many, many hours watching the World Athletics Championships. I watched many, many amusing first round heats in which some of the smaller nations seemed to have sent anyone who wanted to go (the girl from American Samoa in the first heat of the Women's 100m must have weighed 20 stone - I've just looked on Wikipedia and the population is 65000 - surely they could've found someone a bit more athletic looking) and the first batch of finals. Today was a triumphant day for team GB with a gold medal for Jessica Ennis in the heptathlon. She lead from the front all the way through and absolutely trounced the Olympic Champion. Sadly her win was slightly overshadowed by yet another world record for the phenomenal Usain Bolt in the Men's 100m but still an amazing achievement. Unfortunately, our female race walker was disqualified and we failed to qualify for the Women's Javelin but we've got two people through to the final of the Men's Triple Jump so we've still got a chance.
I get the feeling it'll hardly be worth anyone apart from Jamaica and the USA turning up for the 4 x 100m relay. But I guess they could both drop the baton and we could still be in with a vague chance there.
I know what I'll be watching in the evenings for the rest of this week. Go team GB!
