Olympic connections...
Aug. 23rd, 2008 05:52 pmI love the Olympic Games. During the Athens games I was on two weeks annual leave from work and spent practically the whole time glued to the TV. This time around the situation was a bit different. I hardly saw any live action because of the time difference between the UK and Beijing . However, with the help of The Games Today on BBC1, the magical red button and BBC iplayer I managed to see highlights of most of the important bits. It's been brilliant. I actually cried on several occasions and I'm a hard b***h under normal circumstances! My personal highlight was Team GB's Becky Downie finishing 12th in the all around gymnastics. The highest finishing position ever for a female UK gymnast. My low point was the disasterous performance of our male 4 x 100m relay team in qualification. The Americans and Nigerians both dropped their batons which would have given us an excellant chance of a medal if our lot hadn't carried out an illegal baton change on exactly the same spot.
As I'm a geek and love this kind of stuff I thought I'd let everyone know my olympic claims to fame...
1) Mo Farrah, 5000m runner, went to secondary school with me. He was in the same year as my sister. Unfortunately he didn't get through to the final on this occasion.
2) The sister of the guy who won two medals in the flat water kayaking works with one of my best friends.
3) James DeGayle, who won the gold medal in the middleweight boxing, is the son of my boss' best friend.
And now the whole thing is almost over for another four years. Then it's UK 2012. I can hardly wait.
