At least I have chocolate...
Mar. 24th, 2008 09:38 pmToday I went on a family tree related trip to Buckinghamshire with my parents. The idea was to have a wander round some of the villages in which my mum's ancesters lived back in the 19th Centuary. Sadly, the weather was not on our side.
I went down to mum and dad's for lunch at midday. It was snowing when I left my flat, then it stopped and by the time I arrived (15 minutes later) it was snowing again. We had lunch during which time it snowed, hailed and rained. During the drive to Buckinghamshire it rained continuously. When we arrived a Wooburn Green it was still raining. We walked around the green and down Red Lion Lane which is one of the roads our ancesters used to live on. We got cold and wet. I took a photo of the war memorial as I think a couple of people listed may be relatives of ours. Then we got back in the car a drove to Cookham.
Cookham is a medium sized village on the River Thames. A great deal of boating goes on there. It is also the place where the ancient, and somewhat bizarre, practice of swan upping begins each year. My great, great, great grandfather George Collins was a Ferryman in Cookham back in the mid 19th Centuary. We went looking for the Ferry House but it turns out that there were several ferries operating in Cookham and we don't know which one he was involved with. He drowned after falling into the Thames. Family legend has it that he liked a drink or ten which may explain this unfortunate turn of events. We were further soaked during our time in Cookham and got rather muddy as well. It's probably rather nice there in the summer so we'll probably be going back.
The weather has been an absolute pain this Easter. I'm back at work tomorrow and I feel as if I've wasted the long weekend. All I've done is clean the flat and do laundry.
I've also posted some old school pics on Facebook. If you're one of my FB friends feel free to have a laugh at my expense.
More excitingly I am now the proud owner of two green recycling bags courtesy of Hounslow Council. My recycling is now tidy.
Right, I'm off to eat chocolate and watch Skins. Might have to go and get my duvet though :(
