Yesterday...
Mar. 22nd, 2008 09:42 pmI supported the LJ strike yesterday. In typical sod's law fashion I was desperate to post all day. Now the strike is over and I can't remember what I wanted to post about. I really should make more notes to remind me of things. My mother is a committed note writer. She keeps a note pad in her kitchen on which she writes lists of seemingly random stuff. A single page could include: the name of someone's new baby, reminder to feed roses, the name of a CD or book she heard about on Radio 4 and an amount of money I owe her. I mock her but she very rarely forgets anything. I could do with starting lists of: books I want to read, movies I want to see and general things I need to remember. I'm OK with dates as I have a calender. This should perhaps be part of a new strain of post entitled something along the lines of 'being a better person'.
On Thursday night I went out for drinks with my best friend from school and a someone we used to work with at Homebase when we doing our A Levels. We went to Twickenham for a bit of nostalgia. Back in the Homebase days we used to spend a great deal of time trying to get served in the many pubs of Twickenham. Most of the pubs have changed almost beyond recognition but, as I pointed out, at least we get served 100% of the time now! We caught up on all the gossip and got pleasantly drunk. I took along some old photos which may make an appearance on Facebook on the near future. Nasty jumpers and tragic fringes were very much in evidence! We stayed until closing time (chairs had been put on tables around us) and then braved the walk to the bus stop. Shame it was tipping down with rain and very windy. At least I had a brolly which managed not to blow inside out. Unfortunately, had to wait half an hour for the bus. It's a good job I live two minutes walk from the bus stop or I would have been really fed up. Chatted to CB on Facebook when I got in and finally got to bed at 2.15am.
Friday started badly as I'd forgotten to turn off the alarm on my mobile phone. Going to bed at 2.15am and waking up at 6am is not enough sleep for me. After watching a bit of crap TV I made my way down to my parents' house. My sister had been staying with them since Wednesday night as her work was shut on Maundy Thursday and mum had asked me to come down and give her a progress report on the family tree. After dinner dad went off to play badminton leaving me, mum and sis to watch the remake of 'Hairspray' on DVD. I thought the movie was interesting. The original movie had been turned into a stage musical and then the stage musical had been filmed as a movie. The original had a huge impact on me when I first saw it at the age of 15 and is one of my all time favourites. As a result I was disappointed that Tracy didn't feature more (although I thought Nikki Blonsky was wonderful) and found the new subplot involving her parents a bit unnecessary. I loved the dance scenes in the original and felt the song and dancy 'numbers' in the new version felt separate from the story. I was also disappointed that the song 'Hairspray' wasn't used and that Michelle Pfieffer's hair didn't expode at the end. All in all I felt it was a good movie, which communicated a valuable message but I probably would have liked it better if I hadn't seen the original. After watching the movie I walked home. Some of my parents' neighbours were having a noisy party so I was glad I hadn't said I'd stay. Additionally, their next door neighbours were yelling at one another as usual. The family must communicate in rows. This is a total contrast to my family who very rarely shout. I am eternally grateful for my quiet and considerate neighbours.
Today has been completely wasted as a result of the random weather. This morning was extremely windy with the occasional downpour. The downpours were more 'acrosspours' as the wind was making the rain fall almost horizontally. No way was I going out in that. It then cleared up a bit around lunch time and I decided to pop round to Asda to grab some dinner. In the 20 minutes I was out there was a thunderstorm and a hailstorm. My hair was full of hailstones when I got back. All I have achieved today is watching crap TV, going to Asda, being on the net a bit, some laundry and some cleaning. What a waste of holiday weekend.
In better news, Cardiff Bloke's birthday present turned up today. I wasn't sure the order had gone through as I never recieved a confirmation email so I was glad it arrived as planned. He sounds pleased with his Meccano build your own remote control car kit. It has 300 parts and can be made into one of three designs so I think it will be a while before I see the completed article. Completion may be futher delayed by the fact that he got himself a 40 inch TV today. I'm sure that will be quite a distraction. I am now convinced that I have the smallest TV of anyone I know. For some reason this makes me feel like less of a TV addict. I'm not sure that's how it works but as long as I feel better.
In other better news, I got a clean bill of health from the dentist this week. I hadn't been for three years and feared the worst. He had a look and scraped away a bit before declaring that my teeth were in good shape and that I probably only needed to have a check up once every 18 months or so. I complained that my gums had been bleeding a bit and he suggested that I went to see the hygienist for a thorough clean. I haven't been to a hygienist since I had my braces taken off back in 1996 so it's probably about time. £39 is a lot of money to spend in one go but I guess it's better to spend it on tooth maintenance than clothes and chocolate.
I missed the final episode of Moving Wallpaper/Echo Beach on Friday. Initially I wasn't bothered as I thought I'd be able to catch the repeat. Now I'm very bothered as there isn't a repeat this week. Bother. Think I need a Moving Wallpaper icon. Sadly, MW doesn't seem to have caught on with the icon makers of LJ. I have nice new Skins icons though.
