New location...
Dec. 2nd, 2006 12:18 amI am currently typing on my much loved PC but it's now located in the living room of my flat. It's silver coloured so it matches both my kitchen appliances and my TV and Stereo. In fact, I think it sets the room off rather nicely.
Things are still going well with the flat. Slight emergency last Sunday when I attempted to use the washing machine for the first time and it failed to fill with water but dad made a mercy dash from the other end of town to save me. Apparantly, the cold water feed hadn't been turned on. It took him precisely five seconds to sort it out. I don't think he was very happy about being dragged out for that. Now the waste pipe from the washing machine is leaking slightly at one of the joints but I think it only needs tightening up. Good old dad is coming round again tomorrow armed with some sealant and a wrench :)
In much more distressing news my TV reception has gone to pot over the last couple of days. On Wednesday night I could get BBC1 and BBC2 OK but not 3,4 & 5. Now the only channel I can get without an awful lot of flickering is ITV1 which I very rarely watch. I think it's probably to do with the communal ariel so I'm going to collect my portable aerial from home on Sunday to see whether it solves the problem.
I had my first proper house guests last night. Three of my uni friends came round for pizza, wine and desert. I had a great time laying my dining table with place mats and coasters, getting the garlic bread ready and making sure everyone was OK. One of my friends said I was 'playing house' which describes it perfectly. I like living alone but it's great to have people around to fill the place up a bit from time to time. It's all a bit strange though, the flat is still so new and sparkley, I feel a bit like I'm staying in a hotel and I'm going to have to leave and go back to mum and dad's soon.
I'm getting used to the trains. The passenger services run until about 12.30am and then the freights start flying through at high speed. They run that annoying announcement to warn people on the station that the next train isn't going to stop all through the night you know! Very annoying at 4.30am when there's hardly likely to be anyone waiting for a train at a small suburban station. The ASDA lorrys are worse though. They go down my street to get to the loading bay round the back of my block and sometimes two or three of them get stuck down the very narrow street. This is followed by several minutes of engine noise accompanied by 'Please stand clear, this vehicle is reversing'.
Still staying up late to watch the 'This Life' repeats. I've now seen all the episodes I hadn't seen previously as I've got the final one on video from the first showing and that's being shown on Monday. I hope the one off special isn't a big let down. I have this horrible feeling that not putting Ferdy in it is a mistake. Daniela Nardini really deserved the awards she got for her acting in the second series. What a performance! The whole series is so simple but so effective. We could do with a bit more down to earth drama on TV to break up the tacky stuff (bad girls, footballers' wives) and the detective/spy stuff which dominates the schedules.
Random spotting of the week was Nadim Sawalha playing a disgruntled father in 'The Bill'.
Someone suggested to me this week that my ideal night in would involve a TV show about shoes presented by one of the cast of Press Gang. Hmmmm, I wonder if Julia Sawalha's looking for a job at the moment....
Really should get going on my uni work. Some evil, thoughtless person had reserved my library copy of the thrillingly exciting tome 'Employee Reward' so it looks like I'm going to have to fork out £30 to buy it after all. It's a set text so I can't afford to be without it despite the fact that it's utterly dull. Who needs sleeping pills when you can just read Management Studies text books to send you to sleep! That said, Employee Reward is turing out to a very interesting topic. The less said about 'Learning and Development' the better.
Tomorrow's main task is to go out and buy some Christmas cards and decorations. I'm not Christian so I don't celebrate Christmas in a spiritual way, I do however like putting up decorations to brighten up the winter months. I've also volunteered to buy some deccies for work as the old ones were so scabby we chucked them out last year. No one else volunteered, so everyone will just have to put up with my taste. Traditional colours only and lots of glitter! For the flat I'm going to buy the tallest, narrow artifical tree I can carry to put up by the balcony doors. I'm going to decorate it in silver, red and gold with some plain fairy lights. I also plan on buying some tinsel to hand around the place. We always have loads of hanging decorations at home as there are picure rails to pin them to without ruining the plaster. I don't have picture rails here so I'm going to have to make do with a tree and some tinsel. My problem is that I need something non-religious to top the tree. This means the normal stars and angels are out. My mum's staunch socialist family always had a fairy on top of their tree when she was a kid but I haven't seen any in the shops yet.
In very random news, my sister, who last time I looked was two years younger than me, has put herself in the same school year as me on Friends Reunited. Very strange!
Loving everybody's Xmas icons by the way :)
