I've baked cakes. Lots and lots of cakes. The big chocolate fudge sponge worked considerably better than the fairy cakes which are a bit 'well done' (a bit crunchy but not burnt thank goodness). Lets hope they survive the 40 minute bus journey to work in one piece - and that they don't give my work colleagues food poisoning.
I love baking but it has its downside. The temperature in my flat went up to 28 degrees when the oven and the washing machine were on. It was almost unbearable. As everything of interest is in the kitchen/living room I didn't have anywhere to escape to. Oh well.
Mum and Dad have gone away to Devon for the rest of the week as mum is on half term. I have to remember to go to their house and water the garden on Wednesday if it stays dry. They have loads of plants at the moment and I'd hate them to return and find that they'd all died.
Inspired by the brilliant 'Cake Wrecks' blog I'm considering scanning in photos of all the birthday cakes mum made for me whilst I was at primary school. They were all 100% handmade and she put a ridiculous amount of effort in to them. Sometimes she stayed up until the early hours of the morning finishing them off ready for my birthday parties. I remember that all my friends' mums did exactly the same. I think it was an 80s craze inspired by Jane Asher. Mum used to tear her recipies out of 'Family Circle' magazine and get me to chose which cake I wanted. Nowadays all the supermarkets sell novelty cakes and it seems that most mums are too busy to make their own. I was really pleased to see a photo on Facebook of an amazing cake in the shape of a cat one of my old school friends made for her daughters first birthday. Home made cakes are so much nicer and you can tailor them to the recipient. I hate strawberry jam so mum could substitute it in any cakes she made. I wouldn't have had that choice with a generic shop bought cake. I'll have to try and dig out some old photos when I'm at mum's later this week. I can remember having - a computer, a tea party (complete with tiny fondant cups and saucers), a hedgehog, a squirrel on a log and I think I may have had a book at some point and a cat with a mouse. I wonder how many I've forgotten?
Back to work tomorrow. Only 14 working days until I leave now :)
