My last few Saturdays have largely been spent in bed feeling sorry for myself. Frankly, it was time to pull myself together and do something constructive. Clearly I was unable to come to that conclusion on my own. I was rescued by one of my bestest uni friends who invited me out wedding dress shopping with her and another friend who will be her head bridesmaid. I've never been 'wedding shopping' before. My only contact with weddings has been attending them. As a result, a whole new world has been opened up to me, and it's a world I like the look of.
We started off in the studio of a wedding dress designer in Wimbledon Village. She had several sample dresses and let my friend try them on to get an idea of the shape she liked. It was fascinating to see how different a dress can look on the hanger to how it does on a person. The designer was really lovely and talked us through all the different fabrics and cuts. I was in heaven. Shame I'm not the one getting married, although I wouldn't have been able to afford one at £1500 a pop anyway. When my friend found a style she particularly liked the designer put a veil on and she looked so wonderful. She was transformed into a proper bride.
Next stop was a shop which sold bridesmaids dresses. My other friend tried on several dresses all of which were very strange sizes. Cue comedy zip/bra experiences. Anyhow, a rough descision was made on style, colour and detail but it the stuff in that shop was a bit on the pricey side. The shop also sold bridal jewellery, tiaras and shoes. I wanted most of the jewellery. Again, shame I'm not getting married.
The final stop of the day was the bridal studio of Elys department store. I've couldn't believe how many bridal gowns were crammed into that place. This was where it all got a bit surreal. The dress saleswoman was bossy and a bit scary. My friend was interested in looking at the gowns of a designer she'd spotted in a magazine ad. She was handed a catalogue and asked to mark the ones she liked with helpful instructions like "that one's nearer the back, turn more pages". When I left my friend was trying on a gown with the most ridiculously long train. We couldn't quite figure out how it was possible to move whilst wearing it let alone sit down or go to the loo!
My next stop was the opticians. The saga of the contact lens direct debit payment seems to be coming to an end at last. Instead of paying £26 a month for monthly disposables I'm now going to pay £20 a month for five pairs of daily disposables. It doesn't sound like a very good deal but I hardly wear them so it suits me for now. I also decided on a new pair of glasses. My current pair are so scratched that I can't see clearly out of my left eye. The cost is making me feel a bit sick but I need them so what can I do?
Finally, I went out to dinner this evening with my parents, my sister and my aunt and uncle. We haven't seen my aunt and uncle for ages so it was good to catch up with the news from their ever expanding family and to inform them that nothing had changed in ours as per usual. We went to a tiny restaurant called Rustica in Richmond which was pretty good for the price. I had a very yummy mushroom risotto. I was glad that I'd only had a salad for lunch. My uncle then took our photo in the very glamourous location of Richmond Station so he could send a recent picture of us to my great aunt in Canada. The photos came out suprisingly well. I'll try and post one later.
When I got home I set up my new printer/scanner/copier which is very smart. I'm going to try it out a bit later. I can't believe how quiet it is compared to the old printer which isn't that old. Now I'm watching 'Shaun of the Dead' and typing this. The first time I saw that movie I was curled up with CB on his sofa. Since the events of the last few weeks I've been missing CB and also Welsh Ex rather a lot. I've heard from both of them but they're a long way away. I think that it's male attention I'm missing and I don't really know where else to get any from.
