I've been having a rare busy week.
Tuesday was the last Brownie meeting until September. We embarrassed Robin by singing Happy Birthday to her and giving each of the Brownies a little cake with a candle in it to blow out. Cue much over excitment from the Brownies, but to their credit they were all very sensible whilst holding the lit candles. Next year will be our GIC's final year as she has to retire in December 2008. She was a Guider when I was a Brownie (I joined in 1988, so nearly 20 years ago) so it will be the end of an era.
On the way home from Brownies I popped into my parents' house to collect the replacement for my broken vacuum cleaner nozzle which had to be redelivered there as I am never at home during the day. My parents' were out at a jazz club. I went upstairs to use the loo and managed to walk all the way home before realising that I'd forgotten the nozzle. Ooops. As a result I have been unable to hoover all week. It's a good job I have a good old fashioned brush and dustpan.
An Ikea trip was scheduled for Wednesday but my friend dropped out at the last minute so I went for a run instead. I only managed to run for about ten minutes before my ankles started hurting. I have, however, managed to find a route around the park which avoids having to go past the tennis courts thus avoiding choruses of 'nice arse' and 'get those knees up' from the young blokes playing tennis.
On Thursday I went out for a meal with my Rag friends. We went to a Cuban bar between Clapham and Wandsworth which was rather imaginatively called 'The Cuban'. Having opted out of cocktails on our last night out I decided to invest in a comopolitan which was very nice. We ate Tapas which was pretty average but cheap. It only cost us £16 each including drinks and tip. Our waitress was new and we were her first ever table. She couldn't have got a nicer table. We really felt for her and tried to help her as much as possible.
Today, we had decided to a nearby branch of Pizza Express to have a birthday lunch for my manager. One of my colleagues had gone down the night before and handed the cake to restaurant staff. The daughter of another colleague was due to collect four members of the team and drop them off at the restaurant. The other three (including me) planned to do the ten minute walk and meet them there. We were going to leave at 12 noon. At 11.15am a mega thunderstorm descended. When we left work the Reception area was flooded and the estates staff were sweeping water out of the main doors. One of the drain covers outside the main entrance had burst completely. Other people were desperately trying to save computers from the media studies department which was also under water. The walk was interesting. In some places it was more of a paddle. Much of the main road outside work was so flooded the pavement was under a good few inches of water. The traffic going along the road was producing waves! The only way we could get through was by going into people's front gardens (which fortunately went slightly uphill) and paddling into the next garden in between waves. It was quite an experience. By the time we caught the bus back to work at 2pm the water had drained away completely. You never would have thought it had rained. Crazy, crazy weather.
In other unrelated news, I just read that the BBC are going to make a production of Ballet Shoes starring Victoria Wood. I love Ballet Shoes. I first read it when I was at junior school and I desperately wanted to be Pauline. I hope the production is good and it doesn't ruin my happy memories of the book. Time for a re-read I think.
Harry Potter night tonight. I won't read it until it comes out in paperback (it'll ruin my set otherwise and I don't have space for hardbacks) so please don't post spoilers. I'm going to be avoiding the media for the next few days. I will only be tuning into programmes/sites that I can be sure won't be discussing it such as repeats of Allo Allo from the 1980s!
After all my moaning, I accidentally corrupted my Spyro save file so I had to go back to the beginning. I'm nearly back to where I left off now though. I will make sure I have the fire arrow which left me stuck last time around.
Still no sign of the exam results so I am still fairly happy. I bet they'll turn up next week though.
