Sep. 10th, 2006 06:56 pmI missed the much advertised Hollyoaks double bill on Friday but I just caught the very end of the final episode this morning. It was so upsetting. I'm not normally moved by episodes of Hollyoaks, in fact I spend a significant amount of time thinking 'why on earth do I still watch this?' but it got me this morning. It was the part where the new student phoned Joe on his mobile to try and find out where he was, heard the ringtone and realised it was coming from a body bag. The scene could've been cringeworthy if it had been done badly but it was directed and filmed very well. OK, Joe was a peripheral character who never really had any decent plots but it was still an upsetting scene.
Additionally, Chris Fountain and Ali Bastion acted their socks off in the scene at the very end in which Chris' character Justin discovered that both his sisters were dead. Hollyoaks has been steadily improving in quality over the last few years and I hope it gets some recognition and the 'lesser' awards ceremonies like The BSAs and the TV Quick Awards in the future.
As my title suggests, I remember the last time 'The Dog on the Pond' burnt down and I also remember the last Hollyoaks teenage pregnancy storyline. It's a sure sign that you've been watching something too long when the stories start repeating themselves. I actually watched the very first episode of Hollyoaks back in 1995. Chances are I'll never be free though. My mum listened to the first episode of The Archers in the 1950s and still listens every day. God help anyone who dares speak between 7 and 7.15 in our household!
