A happier entry
Jul. 12th, 2006 09:48 pmMy last post was miserable so I'll finish the evening with something happier. Last Friday I went to view a flat with my mum. It was small but nice, however, my mum doesn't want me to commit myself to anything until my dad has seen it so we're all going for another viewing this Friday at 3pm. After that I have to make a decision as you're only able to hold a property for a week. As I said the flat is small but you'd expect that in a shared ownership property. In the style of an estate agent: the accomodation consists of a bathroom (which is nicer than our bathroom at home), a double bedroom with fitted wardrobe (and very little room for anything else once the bed's in it) and a living room/kitchen. A fridge freezer, washer dryer and cooker are supplied and the living room has double doors which open out on to what they describe as a 'Juliet balcony' ie. a few bricks sticking out with a railings around it. There are also two fitted cupboards in the hall, one of which is an airing cupboard whilst the other contains the electicity meter but has plenty of room to store coats etc.
If I sign up for the flat I will have to pay 50% of £140,000 which is £15,000 more than I expected. The cheaper flats had already gone and were on the ground floor practically in the car park of the Travel Lodge next door. I reckon I will incur a monthly mortgage payment of around £300 plus rent on the other half of £140 plus a service charge of approximately £80. Hopefully, it'll be roughly £500 a month before bills. This is doable but it's half my wages gone before I've purchased any shoes (trauma!) I'll try and take some photos on Friday to post here so you can all see what I'm getting myself into.
On Monday we went over to my Grandad's bungalow to start clearing it out, as although he is still with us, Grandad is now too ill to ever go home. Mum and I looked through some of the photos and nabbed lots of embarrasing ones of my dad in his cub uniform etc. We also found some fantastic photos of my Great Grandparents and Great Aunts and Uncles. My Nana was one of eleven children raised in poverty on a farm in Surrey in the 1920s and 1930s so I was surprised to find a photo of her parents. It must have been taken in the 1920s or earlier as Great Grandma died when Nana was just eight years old. We also found a lovely picture of Nana's five older brothers looking very smart and happy. This photo was also tinged with sadness as two of them were killed in action during the second world war. People made such an effort about taking photos in those days. In the present I just take odd snapshots. I haven't had a picture taken with my parents since my graduation in 2002 and I was probably still at school when one was last taken of the whole family together.
On Tuesday my dad and my aunt cleared out the whole of the rest of the flat. Now we just need to arrange house clearance for all the furniture. It was sad to see everything go but most of it was old and no longer fit for purpose so it had to be done. My dad chucked out a brand new ironing board though. I'll need one of the if I'm buying a flat!
Yesterday was badge testing night at Brownies. We had a mixture of Hostess, Craft and Artist to test and they all did very well. They get such a sense of acheivement when they're presented with a badge. I wish I could go back to an age where I was that easily pleased.
Oh well, I'd better go and have a bath and then try and make a few more icons using the not-very-user-friendly software.
