Jul. 30th, 2005 11:23 pmI'll get back to the deep and meaningful post about religion another time, I promise. I've got too much shallow, but exciting stuff to write about to work on it now. I guess this is a poor reflection on me, but hey who cares!
I've got a new phone!!! My old Samsung A300e got wet at the same time as my digital camera (when my friend washed my handbag under a running tap without removing the contents first) and the pixels on the screen were gradually dying. By last week it had got to the point that I couldn't read the top line of my text messages so it had to go. I've had by A300e, the original clamshell phone with a screen on the front as well as in the middle, since Christmas 2001 and I've never had a problem with it so I'm sad to see it go. My friends had started suggesting that I donate it to a museum! Anyway, I am now the proud owner of a Samsung E700. It cost an arm and a leg as I'm still on Pay as You Go but if it lasts as long as the old one I'll consider it to have been a good investment. I'm really sad about gadgets so I've already set up my own wallpaper and I'm looking into buying the Samsung software which allows you to create MP3s to use as ringtones. The phone is an MP3 player with space to store 30 tracks so hopefully I'll be able to sort that out without too much trouble, then I'll have something to amuse me on the bus in the mornings. The only bad point about it so far is that you can't set different text message alerts for caller groups only different ring tones. I always found it useful knowing who'd texted me before I could get to my phone. At least you can set the text message alert to only bleep once though, the old one bleeped every two minutes until you looked at the message by default and could be very annoying.
I purchased my phone in Richmond as my parents were going to visit my Grandad and could drop me off there on the way. Richmond isn't the greatest place in the world to go shopping. I can't believe what a dump the House of Fraser there is turning into. Compared to the branches in Plymouth, Cardiff and Reading it's shocking. I know that they recently closed their Regent Street branch so I wonder if they're going to close the Richmond one down too. The main problem with Richmond is that the shops are old and tend to be pokey. That's OK for the designer boutiques towards the Hill as they don't get many customers at a time, but it's ridiculous for Oasis and Boots. Richmond town centre is also not pedestrianised and the pavements are very narrow so when two community police support men were chasing a shop lifter today everyone had to step into the road to let them pass! Hardly and ideal situation, especially for people with buggies.
I'm still enjoying Press Gang. I watched the whole of series 2 in one evening (12 x 25 minute episodes) finishing at 2.30am. I cried several times which is unusual for me as I tend to be fairly hard hearted with films and TV. The writing is very clever placing a comedy plot and serious plot in each episode with the Spike and Lynda plot running through the whole series. The comedy plot usually involves Colin, the paper's advertising salesman, and one of his schemes while the serious plot involves Lynda, Kenny and Sarah, the serious journalists. Cleverly during the two famous episodes in which Colin finds out that someone at school is being abused by her father Stephen Moffat gives the comedy plot to Spike and Lynda. The series is very character based and Stephen Moffat explores each character deeply. For example Lynda takes no prisoners in her quest for perfection with the paper but in 'At Last a Dragon' she reveals that she is terrified of social events. I sobbed to myself during 'Yesterday's News' when Lynda was unable to tell Spike that she loved him. The set dressing and continuity is excellant and lends so much to the series. In series one the 'Pongs' which Colin is selling during episode two turn up througout the series. In series two the 'Julie's Room' signs are crossed out (Julie has left to be replaced by Sam) and gradually they are removed and a 'Sam' sign is put in their place. It's good fun watching the young actors turning up in the background too. I spotted Michelle Gayle and a guy who often turns up in comedy sketch shows. I've now ordered series 3 & 4 on DVD and I can't wait for them to arrive. Series' 3, 4 & 5 are only 6 episodes long and from what I remember they become pretty surreal so I'll be eagerly waiting for them.
I went to see 'Wedding Crashers' on Wednesday. It was quite good although, as per usual, I'd already seen the funniest bits in the trailers. I found the seats quite uncomfortable as well which wasn't too good as it's a brand new cinema. My friend thought the movie was brilliant so I'm glad we went. One thing that really annoys me is that it cost us £7.50 to get in and we had to sit though half an hour of adverts before the film even started! I'm turning into an old fogey!!!
My Grandad managed to land himself in A & E on Thursday evening. He fell over in the grounds of his sheltered housing complex but he only had a dislocated finger. At the age of 90 I guess these things are bound to happen. My mum and dad went to rescue him from the hospital as he is very deaf but won't admit it. He tends to nod as if he understands things even if he hasn't heard a word the person says.
I've finished reading 'Night Watch' and now I'm reading 'The Fifth Elephant'. This isn't particularly sensible as the former follows on from the latter but Terry Pratchett books tend to work just as well independently as they do as a series so it should be OK.
I'm off of work this week. I didn't want to have a week off when I booked it but I'm pleased that I did so now. I've been feeling quite drained since my manager's 2.5 weeks off and knew that I'd started making silly mistakes and now I've got a sore throat so I think a week off will probably do me good. I haven't really got much planned apart from taking some of my unwanted stuff to a charity shop at some point. Hopefully, I'll be meeting some people I used to work with in Wimbledon for a drink on Wednesday which will make a change and break up the week a bit.
I really must sort out how to put photographs from my digital camera on to the web. It can't be that difficult.
