Jun. 25th, 2005 12:58 amAm I missing something about The White Stripes, or are they a really terrible band?! Mum was watching Glastonbury when earlier (she was hoping to catch the Zutons, but she'd missed them) and The White Stripes came on. To me it always sounds like there's something missing when they play. Obviously, what's missing is a couple of guitar players but I would also argue that a tune is also missing from the stuff they were playing tonight. I just don't get what everyone thinks is so great about them. OK, so I don't like guitar based music in general which doesn't make me the perfect person to pass judgement, but I can appreciate good musicianship when I see it and I sure didn't see it on TV tonight. It just sounds like random noise. I've heard more tuneful Scandinavian death metal bands! My mum, who has a limited knowledge of any popular music which isn't played regularly on Radio 2, thought The White Stripes were a spoof the as the girl playing the drums was had such a poor technique! Maybe I'm getting old or maybe it's just that Cardiff bloke is a fan and we never like the same thing. He has several hundred CDs and I've only ever found two that I also own. One is Dig your Own Hole by the Chemical Brothers, which let's face it, few CD collections would be without, and the other is New Forms by Roni Size and Reprazent, left over from his Drum & Bass loving days.
On a more positive note I've decided that I like The Killers. Their material reminds me of Simple Minds in a funny sort of way. Fatboy Slim's DJ set looked good too. I'm not normally a huge fan of his.
