My Week

Apr. 15th, 2005 11:14 pm
Oh my goodness, what a week!

On Saturday I went shopping in Reading, walked around for hours and purchased...a magazine, an exercise DVD, a Sims expansion pack, a packet of crisps and a nail varnish! I didn't need, or intend to buy, any of those items. So all in all it wasn't a very sucessful trip. I tried on a really nice pair of brown shoes in Ravel but they one kept falling off of my foot as my left foot is smaller than my right. The girl suggested that I try a half insole to make them fit so I might try that in Kingston tomorrow or Sunday. I was also looking for trainers as my present ones give me blisters but I couldn't find any that I liked. I'm really desperate to find a pair as I want to start going jogging at the weekends.

The exercise vibe is still going well. I did a DVD every night from Saturday to Tuesday then I was ill on Wednesday and out on Thursday. I didn't bother tonight as a colleague said it wouldn't be a good idea until I feel fully better and I've still got a very sore throat. My mum says that I look better in the face since I started exercising, I said that wasn't really the idea, it's other parts of my body that I want to look better!

On Sunday I didn't do very much. I watched the OC, which I'm now quite bored with but now can't bring myself to stop watching, and the first episode of Point Pleasant which I wasn't really sure about. It was certainly no Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I guess it may take a while to get going. Talking of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Channel) 5 are repeating the first series on Saturdays. The second series was my favourite so I'm looking forward to seeing that. I'm not holding out much hope though as I also would have liked to have seen repeats of the fourth series of Dawson's Creek but 5 only got as far as the end of the second series before they stopped showing it. Back to Point Pleasant. To be honest, I'm suprised that it's a mainstream US show. I wouldn't think that most American's would think it acceptable to show the daughter of the Devil struggling with her 'powers' in a glossy entertainment programme aimed at teenagers.

On Tuesday I went to Brownies after work and tested 'Home Skills' badge.

On Wednesday, I was ill. I had a really sleepless Tuesday night as I was shivering so much and I still had a temperature in the morning so I phoned in sick. I've now had three days sick in my first six months at work. If I have another day they'll probably start a file on me! There was no way I could work though, I was so dizzy I could hardly stand up. Additionally, I felt sick so I couldn't eat which made my digestive system grumpy but probably helped my diet.

Being ill and off work is so rubbish. All I could do was lie in bed and watch awful daytime TV. I wished I could sleep through it but my joints were hurting so much that I couldn't nod off. I watched a really odd programme about elderly widows in Japan buying furby type talking dolls to keep them company.

In the evening I went to see an amateur production of 'Absurd Person Singular' by Alan Ayckbourn. It was classic Ayckbourn which isn't really suprising as it's one of his earlier plays. I found it very funny, but my parents had seen it before and didn't rate it as much as other productions. The actors were very good, but they experienced the usual problems suffered by actors in plays with traditional style sets. The walls were ricketty and the doors crept open when they obviously weren't meant to!

Today I attended my first retirement party. A lady who had worked in my office for 10 1/2 years retired. This is quite a big deal when there are only 7 people in your team. In my last office we hardly would've noticed if one of the 100 odd people had retired/decided not to turn up for a few days. To celebrate we had a party in one of the classrooms at lunchtime. It was really well attended. All the senior management turned up along with many people the lady had worked with during her time at the College. A few people who had already retired came back too. Our boss gave a really appropriate speech and we gave lots of pressies. All in all, a good way to spend a lunchtime. Wasted lots of food though. As an aside, I don't know why people buy wine for lunchtime parties, especially in an educational establishment. No one ever drinks it, we always end up tipping loads away.

This evening I've been on the net for the first time since last week. Not counting, of course, looking at the Royal Mail website to search for postcodes whilst at work! All I've managed to do so far is write this journal entry and reply to three emails and now it's past midnight. It's hard to fit the internet into an evening when I do an exercise DVD. My evenings tend to look like this:

6:15pm - Return from work and have a drink.
6:30pm - Dinner
7pm - Wait for dinner to settle (maybe iron, sort out washing or something similar)
7:30pm - Start Exercise DVD
8:30pm - Complete Exercise DVD, rearrange room and close down computer.
8:45pm - Have bath and wash hair.
9:45pm - Get out of bath and dry hair.
10pm - Cup of mint tea.
10:30pm - Bed

I'm still reading 'Six Queens' and I still haven't finished Catherine of Aragon. Mary has been born now so shouldn't be long until Anne Boleyn. I'm not sure how much I'm taking in from the book but it's quite a good read. Not too 'show offy' like some history books.

I got my parcel from Amazon which included my map of Ankh Morpork. I'm really chuffed with it. Hours of fun will be had when I read through the first few Discworld books again.
