30 Days of TV meme - Day 4...
May. 19th, 2010 10:45 pmDay 04 - Your favorite show ever
My favourite TV show ever is 'Press Gang'. I discovered 'Press Gang' properly in 2005. I remembered seeing it occasionally as a kid but it was on ITV which we weren't really allowed to watch. I don't think I saw it until it was repeated in the legendary 6pm (or possibly 6.30pm) slot on Channel 4 a few years later. I only remember seeing a few episodes and certainly never followed it properly. Fast forward 12 years and the series was released on DVD in the UK. I'd become a bit of Julia Sawalha fan throughout the years as a result of her work in 'Second Thoughts', 'Faith in the Future' and 'Ab Fab' and I read some good reviews of the DVDs online so I decided to take the plunge and buy series one. I then bought series 2 (which I watched in one sitting finishing at about 3am the following morning!), series 3 & 4 and then had to wait for series 5 to be released.
It's a brilliant show. Everyone should watch it. I honestly think it has something for almost everyone. Tense drama, perfectly timed comedy, a unique romance and some serious stuff too. The cast were mostly quite young when series one was filmed yet the acting is great. The scripts are well written with Steven Moffatt's, now well known, near perfect style.
OK, so it's not all perfect. Some of the episodes aren't that great and the acting of some of the supporting actors is suspect to say the least but it remains engaging. In a world where everyone seems to think that totally miserable US dramas like 'The Wire' are the best thing on TV everyone should bring a bit of Press Gang in to their lives. If nothing else, the shocking 90s fashions will give them a laugh!
