i_just_hide: (Dexter Fletcher - Tube Tales)
Another busy week in the life of i_just_hide. Brownies as usual on Tuesday, dinner with friends on Wednesday and a leaving do on Thursday. Now I'm knackered and there's absolutely nothing on TV to slob out in front of. I even found myself enjoying 'Celebrity Masterchef' earlier on.

Thursday was a bit of a stressful day at work. Most of the computers and phones stopped working at about midday and didn't start again until 4ish. Now the phones are connected to the PCs any network problems knock out the phones as well. This could be a bit annoying if the network keeps breaking down. It seemed to be back to normal today, thank goodness.

Ironically, I attended a training session on the new phones system yesterday morning. We can now dial telephone numbers from our Outlook directories. We can also do all sorts of fancy stuff, like set our phones to go straight to voicemail if we're in a meeting and start ringing again automatically when we're due to come out. There is also a wide range of annoying ring tones to choose from. I think that these will probably be banned fairly promptly. I'm not sure that having a phone playing a ring tone called 'pop rock' will be considered appropriate in our environment. The phones are very clever and everything but I'm not entirely sure how useful the fancy features are going to be. There are only 500 staff in our organisation and we've got on fairly well in the past just looking people up on the contacts database (it has photos!) and dialling their numbers manually. Also, all the forwarding and stuff is well and good but not actually that useful when you sit in an open plan office. We just cross answer one anothers phones if someone isn't at their desk. In other words, I'm not sure whether this is necessary progress. It's good to have caller ID though. It's (normally) good to know who you're going to be talking too. Also, the handsets have rather nifty flashing lights on them. Easily pleased me!

On Wednesday I went to my friend's new(ish) flat in Streatham to have a poke around. It's quite a nice flat in a converted Victorian House. They own a share of the Freehold and have shared access to a rather lovely back garden in which they're growing tomatoes at the moment. We had the biggest Thai takeaway I've ever seen and caught up with the gossip. All weddings, babies and holidays right now. I didn't really have much to offer to any of those topics. Then had to race to catch the train home, missed it and ended up waiting for 20 minutes for connection at Clapham Junction. Didn't get in until midnight and consequently was like a zombie on Thursday morning. I'm too old to be having a social life these days!

Found out my friend's hen weekend will be held in Bristol. I haven't been to Bristol for years so it will be good to have a look around. The package costs £99 each and includes accomodation, dinner and entry to Reflex. Sounds good to me. Now I need to find a way of getting there but even that won't be too expensive travelling on a Saturday. Shame I'm not still with CB or we could have arranged to meet up.

The leaving do yesterday was fine. My boss doesn't like animals and spend most of the evening being harrassed by the barmaid's fox terrior. I thought it was rather cute but the rest of the party claimed that it 'wasn't a proper dog'. They all like Staffs and Boxers which I think are ugly. I suppose there's no accounting for taste. I had my first Magners of the summer. Definitely my favourite refreshing alcoholic drink these days.

Work is very strange right now. The demolition of one building and major renovation of another starts on Monday. Lots of offices have been temporarily relocated to classrooms for the summer period whilst the proper temporary accomodation is being sorted out. They've located the summer offices in the nicest IT classrooms which are on the second floor. I'll get fit if I have to vist them regularly! A large section of the College is completely empty. It was quite eerie walking through a partially cleared Reception Area on the way out this evening. Things are going to be very different on Monday. We'll be using a new entrance for starters. Working on a building site is going to be quite a challenge.

Last episode of Dr Who tomorrow. Not sure whether I'm looking forward to it or dreading it. Before all that I have to go to Kingston and sort out mum's birthday pressie and go and fork out another £15 to the chiropodist. Tut.

Does anyone else think that the current practice of writing 'useful' information under film classification is getting a bit out of hand?! I saw a massive advert for 'Kung Fu Panda' on the side of a bus the other day and underneath the PG sign it said something along the lines of 'Contains Martial Arts Action'. The film's called 'Kung Fu Panda' for goodness sake! What do they think people might mistake that for? A type of tea?

That's all for now as I am tired. I may have an early night.
