Yesterday started with a trip to the chiropodist. I demonstrated my complete and utter crapness by managing to be late despite the fact that the surgery is about 20 steps away from my flat. Oh well. She confirmed that I had a verucca which I sort of knew already. Apparently, veruccas are difficult to get rid of when you're an adult. I also sort of knew that as I've been trying to remove it for ages. Anyway, she treated it with acid and then bandaged my toe up. I've got to go back next week to have it done again. At £15 a trip I hope it goes away quickly!
In the evening I went over to Streatham for my friend's birthday celebration. We started with pizza at The Waterfront on Streatham Common and then got the train to Clapham where my friend had reserved an area in bar called MishMash on Lavender Hill. The bar was quite good. It wasn't too crowded and everyone seemed to be around our age. The last time I went to a bar on Lavender Hill I kept getting chatted up by 19 year old Australian backpackers who looked horrified when I told them how old I was! Anyway, back to last night. As the name of the bar suggests the music was very varied. It went from house to R&B to indie to cheese and back again. The drinks weren't too pricey (by London standards) although it was so loud I couldn't make the bar staff understand what I wanted and ended up with the wrong thing. All the people in our party danced the night away enthusiastically. Some of the dance moves were a bit over enthusiastic towards the end of the evening which is always amusing. We left at 1.30am and got a black cab back to Streatham. Some people decided they wanted something to eat so we ended up in one of the dodgiest looking kebab shops I've ever seen. The birthday girl got a chicken piece and chips for the bargain basement price of £1.50 which pleased her greatly. It was 3am by the time we eventually turned in. I was staying on an airbed in their lounge. It was comfy and warm but I'm just not that great at sleeping anywhere other than my own bed. As a result I am currently very tired.
This morning we got up late, ate bacon sarnies and watched the London Marathon on TV. Watching the marathon runners in our hungover states made us feel pretty humble. This afternoon we went to the Streatham Kite Festival which is held annually on Streatham Common. I went two years ago and it was lovely. We had a picnic, flew my friends' kite and watched the displays. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side this year. The wind was gusty which made it really difficult for the people doing the displays to music. It was also a day of true April showers so we got a bit wet and muddy. The birthday girl's fiance bought a kite in the shape of a 'buzzy bee' for £9 while our other friends had bought their stunt kite from home. The buzzy bee kite was really cool. It went up easily and the wings flapping in breeze looked
really cute. I wanted to take some photos but I was scared of getting my camera out in the rain. My other friend's fiance was pretty good with his stunt kite and rather cheekily used poor buzzy bee as target practice! Quite a few kite societies were there. One society was demonstrating an absolutely massive kite in the shape of an octopus. It was very impressive watching them launch it. We watched one display in which a guy flew two kites in time to the theme to 'Goldeneye'. He used the kites to create a story which went along with the words to the song which was very enjoyable. The best bit, however, was watching the community get together and fly their kites. There were tiny kids, over enthusiastic dads, and whole families having a great time. Good, cheap family fun. Even little babies were fascinated by all the colourful things in the air. I'd recommend it if anyone is in the Streatham Common area this time next year.
After the rain got too heavy to put up with we went back to the flat and the birthday girl's fiance made us loads of yummy pancakes. I'm so spoilt by my friends, I really am. Some friends who couldn't make it the night before popped round and we caught up with them. I finally left for home at 4.40pm with the aim of getting the 4.51pm train to Clapham. Unfortunately, I missed the train by seconds and had to wait half an hour for the next one. I arrived home at 6pm and left almost straight away for dinner with my parents. I really need to get some sleep.
My friends are fabulous. I love them to bits. I've had such a fun, happy weekend. Now I've got a whole week off of work to enjoy. Yay!
Oooh and I've got my invitation to my friend's wedding in October. All my five best friends and their partners will be there. It's going to be so much fun. I don't have a plus one of course but I'm sure I'll survive.
I'm not allowed to get my right foot wet for four days. I'm going to have an interesting time getting into the bath tomorrow morning.
Right. Definitely time for bed now.
