The week that was...
Aug. 18th, 2007 11:33 pmFrankly, my week was unexciting. I have tried to pick out the most interesting parts for inclusion in this post but I have to warn you now that it may still be a bit on the dull side.
On Tuesday, I was waiting for the bus outside work when some of the Heathrow anti climate change protesters cycled past. About 15 of them were cycling slowly down the main road handing out leaflets and generally drawing attention to themselves. They were followed by 3 police vans with their lights flashing and four policemen on bikes. The bike police seemed intent on making sure the traffic kept running, making the protesters wait for cars to turn out of side roads etc. I found this quite ironic as there is always a traffic jam around the corner from work so the cars weren't really being helped at all. The protesters clearly fitted into the 'hippy' category rather than the 'trouble maker/environmental terrorist' category our local police commander seems to insist they belong to. I wonder how much of my council tax has been wasted on the heavy police presence applied to this peaceful protest. I wholeheartedly support the protesters. There is no way another runway should be built at Heathrow. We already suffer from aircraft noise and air pollution. The cancer rate around here is at epidemic levels. Strangely, the government don't like people suggesting that this could be due to air pollution but scientific research supports the idea. I dread to think what it will be like in a few years time as people like me who grew up with the pollution get older.
On Friday there was a card in my letterbox from Royal Mail stating that they attempted to deliver a recorded delivery letter whilst I was out. I'm not sure what it is but I assume it's the certificate for completing my uni course. The Royal Mail website is on the blink at the moment, so I'll ask mum to walk round to the sorting office to get it next week.
Also in my letterbox on Friday was a leaflet from the management company who run the development my flat is in. The leaflet says that it is now easy to shop in our town as there is a 300 space multi-storey car park. The multi-storey car park is part of our building. It take precisely 2 minutes to walk through the car park into the shopping centre. Why on earth did they feel the need to put a leaflet in the letterbox for each of the 93 flats in my block. What a waste of time and trees.
Talking of my local area, there was a big fight outside my flat last night. I didn't realise it was a fight until afterwards as I'm used to people making lots of noise outside after closing time. There's a level crossing at the end of the block so people are forced to walk down our street to cross the railway. Often, they're drunk and/or noisy. I didn't realise something bad had happened until I heard the voices of some of my neighbours outside. As far as I could tell there had been a fight, someone was injured and the others ran away and left them. Some of my neighbours had gone out to see if they could help. After a while, the police and an ambulance turned up. The person walked into the ambulance so he couldn't have been too badly hurt. My neighbours are really good to go out and do their civic duty. I generally have little sympathy for people who get into fights and would be frightened to go and help someone who had been hurt during a fight. You never know when the perpetrator could be back and turn on you too.
In other news, I have a verruca. I don't know where it came from as I haven't been in a swimming pool or gym changing room for ages. It flipping hurts though. I purchased some bazuka in Boots today so hopefully it'll be gone soon.
