OK, I'll start with the bad news.

Firstly, in the very shallow but still bad section, I walked past Argos today and was informed by a huge photo in the window that my mp3 player which I paid £219 for a fortnight ago is now being sold for £109. That really put me in a good mood for the rest of the afternoon.

Secondly, the hospital phoned on Friday night and told us that Grandad was deteriorating rapidly and he may not make it through the night. My dad, who was half way out of the door on the way to play badminton, rushed over to visit him and found him in a bad way. Grandad is however still with us as I write. The result is that everyone is on edge all the time knowing that the next phone call could bring bad news.

In the good news. I had a really nice Thai meal on Saturday night as part of a friend's birthday celebrations. The occasion was slightly dampened by both the oppressive heat and the recent capitulation of the England football team but everyone cheered up once the food arrived!

Also, I now have a mortgage. I went to the building society this afternoon and got a certificate. Unfortunately, the cheapest flats in the development had already been sold so I need to go back and get a quote for a few thousand pounds more. I've worked out that mortgage + rent + ground rent + service charge will come to less than £500 a month which is half of my salary but still manageable. I won't be far from mum and dad's so at least I can return home to eat when I haven't got any money for food! I'm hoping to arrange a viewing for a flat on Friday provided my boss doesn't mind me taking another half day.

I went out to dinner with a guy I used to work with on Monday night. It was good to see him again. He's a huge music fan and is trying to convince me to go to my first ever gig. I'm not entirely sure as I feel that as an elderly 25 year old I'm too late to start. He reckons I'll be OK as long as I sit at the back but I'm not too sure. I do have tentative plans to go to Glastonbury next year though. That'll be scary.

Started reading the latest Harry Potter book on the train on Monday night. I was absolutely gobsmacked by chapter two however, I don't like the books as much now they've become really 'dark'. I still think JKR is a fantastically clever writer though. Dumbledore's comment that at least Mr and Mrs Dursley hadn't done as much harm to Harry as they had their own son was very well observed. It's so clever that she makes accurate social commentary by putting it in a children's fantasy context.

In random 'Press Gang' related stuff this week: Jake Wood (the killer in 'Killer on the Line') has joined Eastenders as the dodgy father of Bradley (who reminds me of Press Gang's Kenny). Lucy Benjamin was on ekeing out a bit more of her post 'X Factor' popularity on Richard and Judy this afternoon talking about one of their summer book choices. Angela Bruce(Chrissie Stuart) is joining the cast of 'The Bill' according to teletext. Ohh, and at 10.50pm this evening I'll be tuning in to hear Julia Sawalha narrating an old episode of 'Comedy Connections' about 'Men Behaving Badly' a show which was produced by Steven Moffat's mother in law.

I still haven't made any new icons I'm afraid. I just haven't had the time. I'm meeting my dissertation supervisor for the first time on Monday so I won't have much time over the weekend either. She phoned yesterday evening and obviously had no idea who I was, what course I was on or what my dissertation was going to be about. Clearly she hadn't read my proposal. This is going to be interesting...

Right, I'm off to relax in a nice cool bath.
