Snow Day

Feb. 2nd, 2009 07:36 pm
Why is it always soooo much more satisfying being off work on a day you were meant to go in?  I didn't do anything today that I couldn't have done on any weekend but it felt much, much better.

My snow experience began at 9am yesterday evening.  It had been cold when I'd walked down to my parents' house three hours earlier but there was no sign of snow.  When I left to go home a good inch had already settled.  Being British I expected that it would gone by the morning.  When I left for work this morning I was pretty suprised to find that (a) more snow had settled overnight (b) it was still snowing (c) the public transport system had ground to a halt.  A kind chap told me that the buses weren't running, so I wandered round to the station where I was informed that no trains were running on the Hounslow loop.  I started walking but it started snowing again and I realised that I might get there OK but it could snow more during the day and then I'd be stuck there.  I turned round and went home.  I couldn't get through to work on the phone, so I emailed and told them I was staying home.  It turned out that the Principal had decided to shut the College to students and had told staff to only come in if it was safe to do so.  The College will also be shut tomorrow but I'm going to the other site ten minutes walk away to man the Reception desk.  I doubt there will be Brownies tomorrow as the schools are going to be shut.

I can't remember there ever being this much snow as this in my little corner of West London.  I wish I'd had someone to go out and play with!  Some peope were building enormous snowmen in the park.  Proper ones made of three massive snowballs one on top of the other.

I spent the day doing household chores, watching series one of This Life on DVD and playing Lego Batman on my DS.  I've been snuggly and warm in my flat.  I managed to do all my ironing so at least I didn't waste the day.

Now it's raining and the snow is turning to grubby slush.  Mum seems to think it'll freeze over night and be very slippery tomorrow.  There's also talk of more snow falling.  We'll see.
