i_just_hide: (Dexter Fletcher - Tube Tales)
Saturday nights spent at home alone really are rubbish. There's nothing on TV and everybody else is out so there's no one to phone/text/chat to on MSN. It must be time to update my neglected LJ.

My life seems to be on the up again. I think the misery and tiredness I've been experiencing over the last couple of weeks was down to a cold or some sort of similar illness. My poor old dad has been really poorly with an inner ear infection this last week. He couldn't get out of bed some days because he was dizzy and kept falling over. It was the 11th week he'd had off sick from work this year (8 weeks with a broken arm, 2 weeks with infected athlete's foot and 1 week with this latest thing). I bet his HR department love the effect he's having on their sickness figures. Next time you see an expose in the Daily Mail about the excessive amount of sick leave being taken by civil servants you'll know whose fault it is! At least he's better now though. I was beginning to worry that he wouldn't be able to come to my award ceremony on Monday.

Last Saturday I did something I hadn't done for many, many years. I went to a really tacky night club. The club in question is called McKluskys and is located beside the Thames in Kingston. It opened whilst I was away at Uni and I haven't often been out locally since I moved back into the area so this was my inaugeral visit. I feared the worst. I'm not the biggest fan of tacky clubs which play 'classic party tunes' and this place has recently been advertising the fact that its carpet 'no longer smells of sick' which didn't exactly fill me with hope. The evening didn't start particularly well. My friend had put our names on the guest list as it was her birthday. Confusingly the guest list queue was longer than the ordinary queue and it was free to get in anyway. It was cold and some members of our party were not amused. Eventually we got in but not before we were searched and my chewing gum was confiscated by the most miserable female bouncer I've ever met. She even made me open my mouth to check that I wasn't chewing. God forbid I should spit my gum out on the floor and ruin their hideous carpet! Once we were inside we established that the benefits of being on the guest list were a glass of fizzy alcohol each (not sure what it was, it tasted a bit like appletise) and a tiny bit of cake each. At least it was better than nothing I guess. Once I got on the dancefloor I actually started enjoying myself. I wasn't even all that drunk which makes it even more suprising. They played many 'classic party tunes' which I normally despise such as Brown Eyed Girl and I will Survive but I managed to keep on smiling. We had quite a few guys in our group so I wasn't harrassed by sleezy men and it generally turned into quite a good night. Maybe my attitude to music is thawing in my old age. If it is, any street cred I ever had is on it's way right out of the window! To give the place its due, it didn't smell of sick. This may have had something to do with the large number of members of staff standing around armed with mops and buckets ready to leap into action.

The first episode of 'Cranford' was rather good. It's great to see Julia Sawalha in a petticoat again and seemingly playing a sympathetic character for once. The cast is like an A-Z of amazing British female actors ranging from the alway amazing Dame Judi Dench to the up and coming Carey Mulligan. Hopefully, it will keep me amused on Sunday evenings for several weeks to come.

Also good this week was 'Ugly Betty'. I hadn't been enjoying the current series as much as the last but this weeks episode marked a return to form. Even Victoria Beckham put in a half decent performance - playing herself. Poor old Alan Dale though. This was the third time I'd seen him drop dead of a heart attack in a major TV show. I wonder if he has 'death scenes' listed as a strength on his resume!
