All about the weekend...
Sep. 4th, 2006 06:44 pmAll things considered it wasn't a bad weekend. Had my hair cut on Saturday and then went to Shepperton to drop something off at my solicitors. This reminded me of the extortionate price of public transport in Surrey. £2.70 to get the bus from Shepperton to Ashford! A heck of a lot of money when you consider that in London I can get from Hounslow to Shepherds Bush for 80p. The bus driver urged me to get a return ticket because it was better value but I wasn't going back so it wasn't much help!
On Sunday I went to Ikea in Croydon with one of my uni friends. I was testing out sofas and she was looking for replacements for things she'd broken in her rented flat. Neither of us were very sucessful but it was good fun anyway. You certainly get a lot of excercise on an Ikea shop. I felt like I'd done a fitness video by the time we'd finished. We also treated ourself to lunch in the cafe. I had cous cous with grilled vegetables followed by a fabulous chocolate mousse and it was well worth the fiver I paid for it. I really want a pink sofa now. I think it'll look OK as the rest of the room will be very plain but I'm a bit worried that it'll scare off any man who walks through the door. Hmmmm.
Mum and Dad are back from their hols. They liked Harrogate but not as much as they liked Durham. I'm now the proud owner of some mint imperials from England's Oldest Sweetshop. They came in a little model sweetshop with a minature scoop. Don't you just love kitsch British tourist gifts!
Looks like there's going to be another Holding On meet up. We're going to try and see Lee Ross (aka 'Kenny Phillips - The Yummiest Man in Rock' or more commonly 'that scary Owen bloke off Eastenders') in a play at the Bush theatre in London. Sounds good as The Bush is one of the fringe theatres in London and somewhere I've never quite got around to going to. Lee Ross also gets very good reviews when he does theatre. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again too.
Whilst at Ikea I was trying to explain that Livejournal isn't quite like MySpace. Or it isn't the way I use it anyway. I use it as a diary and a way to meet good people, not a tool to meet as many people as humanely possible, and especially not to re-aquaint myself with people I didn't like 10 years ago.
Talking of people I didn't like 10 years ago, I note from a recent visit to Friends Reunited that my evil ex-fiance is no longer a van driver for Occodo. Should I ever wish to order my groceries from Waitrose (or more accurately, if I'm ever rich enough to order my groceries from Waitrose) I can do so without worrying about and awkward situations at the doorstep. He's now a High Court Enforcement Officer. I think this means he's some kind of heavy. When he was going out with me he wanted to work in a nursery, how things change.
On a more solemn note, I was sad to hear about the death of Steve Irwin. OK so he was very OTT and did some outrageous things but he was a passionate and committed conservationist and I admired him. Especially in the way that he seemed to love all animals equally, even the poisonous, ugly, unfriendly species. I've spent many a happy Sunday afternoon watching 'The Crocodile Hunter - Diaries' on ITV and I'd definitely visit Australia Zoo should I ever be down under. The good thing is that I know from watching the show that his long time team will continue his good work and keep his memory alive.
